All physiotherapists in the department are Chartered and State Registered and many have achieved specialist qualifications as part of their ongoing professional development. This ensures that the service that is provided is current and uses the best evidence based practice that is available; we aim to support you to return to your work, sporting and leisure activities as soon as is possible.

The department provides a professional, friendly and individualistic service, ensuring that your needs are at the centre of your therapy. This is achieved by you being assessed and treated by the same physiotherapist throughout your treatment sessions. We can offer early morning and late evening appointments where possible.

The physiotherapy department has 4 cubicles for outpatients appointments, one of which is a premium care room, that is a contained clinic room with a lockable door. This allows privacy and dignity to be kept when more intimate therapy is given such as the assessment and treatment of women’s health conditions. The department also has a gymnasium which has a treadmill, exercise bike, gym balls, trampette and all the equipment required for you to undertake your rehabilitation.

Therapy and Treatment

Following the assessment of your condition and/or injury a personal treatment plan will be developed with you. This will allow you to meet your goals and improve your physical and emotional wellbeing and return you to an increase level of physical activity.

The following treatment and therapies maybe included as part of your rehabilitation.

  • Mobilisation, including hands on therapy and exercises: Mobilisation therapy aims to improve the range of movement in joints and the surrounding soft tissue, including, ligaments, tendons, muscles and neural tissue.
  • Strengthening and conditioning exercises: Strengthening exercises aim to develop the strength, condition and improve imbalances within your muscular system. The exercises may include the use of resistance bands and weight bearing exercises.
  • Postural correction and movement pattern awareness: When people suffer an injury, are in pain or have stiffness within joints and loose soft tissue flexibility; it often causes them to adopt poor postures or move in an away that can be irritable to your body. Examples of this are limping following a lower limb injury or stooping with a spinal problem. Your physiotherapist will work with you to allow you to be able to improve your movement patterns and posture.
  • Soft tissue techniques: These techniques, including massage and frictions and are used to facilitate soft tissue recovery and normalise tone. These techniques are used in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions.
  • Strapping and taping: Strapping and taping can be used to limit movement of a joint or soft tissue to aid recovery in the acute stage of injury. They can also be used to support and promote movement in more long-term conditions.
  • Electrotherapy: In the department we have access to a therapeutic ultrasound and TENS machines which can help facilitate recovery and manage pain.
